He is the son of Shiva and Parvati and is therefore the brother of Ganesha.  Here he is shown with six heads ( five in a row on his shoulders and one behind) and twelve arms, holding a variety of weapons appropriate to his identity as a war god.  These inculde a sword, shields, bow, axe, trident and damaru.  His two main hands are empty. and is also known as Shadanana-Subrahmanya. He rides on a peacock vehicle (vahana) and on each side stands one of his two wives, Devasena (left) and Valli (right), standing in a tribhanga pose, fit  into slots projecting from the front of the base.
