He looks at the chalice which represents the cup mentioned in the Gospels, symbolizing Christ's agony combined with a reference to the Eucharist.","physicalDescription":"The haloed figure of Christ, shown with a forked beard and wearing a gown, kneels on the left of the panel looking up to the right at a chalice containing a wafer which stands on a projecting piece of ground. The bearded figures of St. James the Less and St. Peter and the beardless figure of St. John the Evangelist, who rests his head on his right hand, are represented asleep. Three trees with curious polyhedral foliage are included on the panel, one behind the figure of Christ and two more behind a fence indicating the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives.\r\n\r\nThe top corners of the panel have been repaired with plaster. The faces of the figures are rather worn. There is much green paint on the ground and traces of the usual daisy pattern. Green paint also remains on the trees. There are slight traces of red in the folds of the garments and brown and gilt on the hair of the figures. Latten wires are plugged into the back of the panel in three places. The bottom of the panel has been cut away.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"alabaster","id":"AAT11101"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"gilt","id":"x30367"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved, painted and gilt alabaster","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"Medieval","id":"AAT20756"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AH0736","2018KU0244"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES333295"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"15th century","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W.
