They were trials of patterns and stitches that had been copied from others, and records of particular effects achieved that could be recreated again. This is a type known as a band sampler, and it is the earliest signed and dated example in the Museum's collection. With the composition of band samplers comes the first clear indication in England of the form being used as a method of instruction and practice for girls learning needlework.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mayow, Mildred","id":"A6553"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk in double running, cross and Montenegrin cross stitch","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF5325","2006AP0197","2011ER8516","2011FB0683","2011FB0678","2017KB3649","2017KB3689"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES311878"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1633","earliest":"1633-01-01","latest":"1633-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Muriel Gardiner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"68","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Mildred Mayow 1633'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1633","earliest":"1633-01-01","latest":"1633-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidering","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; embroidering; silk; 1633"}],"objectHistory":"A search of the International Genealogical Index produces only one likely candidate for Mildred Mayow; the daughter of Nicholas Mayow or Maio, christened 7 September 1623 at Chislet in Kent.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Linen sampler by Mildred Mayow, embroidered with silk; English; dated 1633.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
