The lack of movement in the stiff drapery implies that the figure cannot have been made in Spain any later than about 1630.\r\nPainted wood figures and reliefs of sacred subjects was the most common type of sculpture in Spain from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Many were made for large-scale altarpieces, although some smaller figures, like the present piece, were also in demand for devotional purposes.","physicalDescription":"Statuette depicting the Virgin Mary standing with hands clasped, her head looking down and to the left. She wears a deeply carved blue painted cloak with a pubched border over a red robe and a white painted wimple (headscarf). She rests on her right foot, and steps forward with her left. She stands on a circular base, painted to resemble grassy ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted walnut","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AT4105","2006AE8095"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES395094"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Castile","id":"x35197"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1600-1630","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1630-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Dr W.L.Hildburgh FSA in 1951; purchased by the donor in Madrid in 1921.\n\nHistorical significance: In style this figure recalls Castilian sculpture of the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, and is reminiscent of the work of Juan Bautista Vázquez the Elder (1525-1588). The sweet facial features however imply it is slightly later than the mid-sixteenth century, while the colmunar folds of the drapery suggest it cannot be later than the first third of the seventeenth century. It is of painted walnut, although the paint is probably nineteenth century.","historicalContext":"This statuette probably formed part of a crucifixion group, which may have been made for a side-altar in a convent, or for private devotional purposes. Painted wood figures and reliefs of sacred subjects was the most common type of sculpture in Spain from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Many were made for large-scale altarpieces, although some smaller figures, like the present piece, were also in demand for devotional purposes.","briefDescription":"Statuette, painted walnut, The Mourning Virgin, Spain (Castile), ca. 1600-1630","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Trusted, Marjorie. <font u>Spanish Sculpture</font u>.
