At this time, blue and white porcelain was still exported to Europe, although the competition of local ceramic factories led to a substantial decrease in volume.\r\n\r\nThe shape of this mug imitates a European model, while the decoration combines standardised ornamental bands in underglaze blue with a characteristic Chinese design, also known as 'rice grain pattern'. The technique involved the piercing of a pattern when the clay was leather-hard, and the dipping of the object in glaze; after firing, the holes filled with glaze appeared transparent.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain mug with double handle made of two interlaced bands attached to the side of the mug by means of an applied floral decoration; the mug is decorated with a broad central band of diaper pierced design or ‘rice grain pattern’ enclosed within two decorative bands of <i>ruyi</i> and stylised flowers round the rim and base.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"},{"text":"moulding","id":"AAT53134"},{"text":"piercing","id":"AAT231153"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain decorated in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2019MK0512"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES367660"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1790-1810","earliest":"1785-01-01","latest":"1810-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":".","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from D.
