From 1752 – 55, the royal mistress collaborated with François Boucher and the prominent artists, Joseph-Marie Vien and Charles Eisen, on a set of 52 prints after the carved semi-precious stones (carnelians, onyx, jasper) of Jacques Guay, the fashionable gem-engraver to King Louis XV. Guay had also taught Pompadour to carve gems which she could gift to the King and some of these were included in the suite which contained a range of mythological subjects, portraits of the royal family and even Pompadour’s dogs. These etchings, now rare as they were only printed for a select group of friends, are a unique record of Guay’s craftsmanship and pay homage to the close social networks in 18th-century\r\nart collecting.","physicalDescription":"Etching and stipple engraving.
