This narrow section would often be wrinkled up to the knee in a style called <i>chiridar</i>, which means 'with bangles'. In more recent times, this narrow leg section would be bias-cut to give a more clinging effect, but surviving nineteenth-century trousers all seem to have straight-cut legs. On this pair, the decorative effect is concentrated on the simple but elegant embroidered cuff. The trousers would be worn with a long, straight shirt, probably also with embroidered decoration.","physicalDescription":"Purple silk trousers with white stripes and white embroidery at the cuffs ","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woven","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woven silk","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AP6197","2017KA0780"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"034","id":"THES312188"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pyjamas","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sindh","id":"x35001"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 19th century","earliest":"1825-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"133","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-02","latest":"2017-06-02"},"part":"Waist to ankle","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"85","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-02","latest":"2017-06-02"},"part":"Waist","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"No. 1 / Silk Paejama of a Lady of Rank [Hindustani inscription below] No. 2","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"[Hindustani] [undeciphered ] zenana [undeciphered] / Shalwar ","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silk striped woman's trousers, Pakistan, mid 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Colours of the Indus : costume and textiles of Pakistan / Nasreen Askari and Rosemary Crill.
