The Virgin Mary stands with her hands raised. St Thomas, holding part of her girdle is shown kneeling on the left with an angel behind him while another angel kneels on the right. \r\n\r\nThe heads of the figures are missing.","physicalDescription":"The figure of the Virgin (head missing) wears a gown and a cloak closed at the neck with tasselled cords hanging down in front, with the ends looped over. She stands in the centre of the panel in a mandorla carved with rays. The bearded figure of St. Thomas, hands together in prayer and holding the Virgin's belt, kneels on the left. Behind him is a kneeling angel with right hand raised. Above him on the left is another angel. A figure wearing a girded alb and cloak kneels at the bottom right, left hand raised. Unusually, the Virgin's shoes are shown below her gown.\r\n\r\nThe top and most of the right of the panel are missing, including most of the mandorla and the hands of the angel at the top left and the figure at the bottom right. One would expect the panel to have included balancing figures of angels, with God the Father, flanked by angels, at the top of the panel above a division indicating heaven.\r\n\r\nThe usual daisy pattern remains on the green ground at the bottom and higher on the left of the panel. Red paint and gilt remain on the mandorla and on the edges and folds of the garments of the figures. The back of the panel has been backed with slate. The bottom has been cut away.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"alabaster","id":"AAT11101"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"gilt","id":"x30367"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved, painted and gilt alabaster","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"Medieval","id":"AAT20756"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AH3706"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES360636"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fragment of a panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"second half 15th century","earliest":"1450-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W.
