It was originally based in Edinburgh but merged with Morton Sundour Fabrics' weaving factory in Carlisle in 1930. It achieved great success in Britain and in the USA under the enlightened design directorship of Alastair Morton (1910-1963) who commissioned free-lance designers and artists to create work for interpretation by the unit. It was taken over by Courtaulds in 1963.","physicalDescription":"Furnishing fabric of screen-printed cotton.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Victor Vasarely","id":"A6491"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Edinburgh Weavers","id":"A6276"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen-printed cotton","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2010EK8829","2006AU3023"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES328477"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Carlisle","id":"x35079"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1962","earliest":"1962-01-01","latest":"1962-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Edinburgh Weavers","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"50","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"108","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"94","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furnishing fabric 'Kernoo' of screen-printed cotton, designed by Victor Vasarley for Edinburgh Weavers Ltd., Carlisle, 1962.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"geometric patterns","id":"AAT165213"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.327-1963"],"accessionNumberNum":"327","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1963,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-23","recordCreationDate":"2002-11-08","availableToBook":true}}
