From 1856 onwards, Scott painted a series of eight historical paintings about the history of the English-Scottish border region. This watercolour shows the elevation of the south wall of the inner courtyard of Wallington Hall that Scott was tasked to decorate. One of the lower bays contains a sketch of the mural entitled 'The Building of the Roman Wall', the first of a series of eight scenes from Border history which decorate the hall. A watercolour of this scene by Scott (inv. 355-1891) is preserved in the V&A collections. At Wallington an almost identical watercolour, but without the annotations, can be found (inv. NT 582328).
