These range from a minutely worked interlacing stitch to the relatively large-scale herringbone stitch used on the green and yellow stripes that frame the embroidered areas and conceal the seams running down the front of the garment. The variety of coloured silks used for the embroidery is also exceptional, and the line drawings reveal the whole garment to be a surprisingly complex patchwork of panels.","physicalDescription":"Tunic of embroidered silk with silk thread, woven gold-thread ribbon, braid and silk tassel. The edges of the sleeves and the neck opening of this woman's tunic are strengthened with a braid of silk and gold thread or tightly packed blanket stitches (toi) followed by a series of finely worked narrow and wide borders.\n\nFull length and long sleeved. The front yoke, sleeve ends and the deep 'apron' pocket are embroidered in darn stitch, interlaced stitch, chain stitch, and herringbone stitch with rows of geometrical designs such as diamonds, triangles and chevrons. A row of stylised rosettes run down each sleeve. The neck opening is faced with a band of yellow cotton embroidered with laid gold thread.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"gold thread","id":"x30128"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered silk with silk thread, woven gold-thread ribbon, braid and silk tassel","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AR0107","2006BC6578","2006AR0108"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES390092"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tunic","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kalat","id":"x37261"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 19th century-early 20th century","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1950-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Anne Whitehead","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"131","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"168","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"across sleeves","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"50.75","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"66","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tunic of embroidered silk with silk thread, probably made in Kalat, Baluchistan, Pakistan, late 19th century-early 20th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Colours of the Indus : costume and textiles of Pakistan / Nasreen Askari and Rosemary Crill.
