At this time the export activities from China to Europe were dominated by the Dutch East India Company, established in 1602.\r\n\r\nThe cylindrical shape of this vase, very popular during the 17th century, was called rolwagen in Dutch inventories. The decoration of fantastic animals belongs to the traditional Chinese repertoire: the qilin is one of the four mythical animals and an auspicious symbol, a creature with horns, hooves and a body similar to a deer but with scales. The phoenix is another of the four mythical animals; associated to the south, it symbolises longevity and prosperity.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain vase of cylindrical shape with slightly contracted neck, decorated in underglaze blue with phoenix, qilin, butterflies, bamboo and peonies; round the rim a band of stylised leaves.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Ming","id":"AAT18438"},{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2016JE2803","2016JE2802","2016JE2815","2016JE2817","2006BF8836","2018KU9453","2019LX5529"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"6","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1630-1645","earliest":"1625-01-01","latest":"1645-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mr Andrew Burman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"46.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Porcelain vase painted in underlaze blue with phoenix, qilin and insects, China, Ming dynasty, ca. 1630-1644.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Clunas, Craig (ed.). Chinese Export Art and Design.
