It is made of silk and gold fabric, lined with red and yellow silk. the distinctive circular opening, combined with a rectangular panel to cover the chest, identifies this garment as an <i>angarkha</i>, which simply means 'protector of the body'. The upper part of the robe is evidently its focal point, and it is made more elaborate by the addition of a row of non-functional 'buttons' around one side of the front opening. Like all robes of this type, the distinctive round neck and waist are fastened by silk ties - in this case in red, blue and yellow - which are also used for the colourful piping around the neck and edges. It would have been paired with narrow trousers (<i>paijama</i>) of silk and gold fabric.","physicalDescription":"Man's robe (angarkha) of red silk woven with silver-gilt-wrapped thread, lined and quilted, with red, yellow and blue silk edging and ties.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"tailoring","id":"x39134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2011EM7323","2011EM7339","2011EM7338","2011EM7337","2011EM7324","2011EM7322","2006BC6592","2006BC6591","2006AP6230"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404989"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Robe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sindh","id":"x35001"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Tailored"},{"place":{"text":"Gujarat","id":"x29825"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Likely origin of the brocaded fabric"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 19th century","earliest":"1825-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1867","earliest":"1862-01-01","latest":"1871-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Acquired by the India Museum in 1867, likely from the Paris Exhibition of that year."}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"104","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"across sleeves","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"114","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"across sleeves","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"1640","unit":"mm","qualifier":"overall","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879.
