The acanthus flower was a common decorative motif at the time it was made, and illustrates the wide range of classical motifs in the decorative arts that were available to the medieval craftsman.\r\n\r\nSome of the surviving medieval glass was removed from the cathedral in the mid-1800s and replaced with copies. The original panels were stored in various glaziers’ workshops, and eventually sold off to private collectors. This makes it difficult to determine where this panel may have come from.\r\n\r\nOver time, some of the original panels from the cathedral have come into museum collections in Britain and in the United States.","physicalDescription":"Stained glass panel, rectangular section of border from a window, composed of four repeating acanthus motifs arranged vertically in blue and white glass with black painted details flanked by beaded borders in yellow and green glass.\r\nOn a red ground between yellow and green beaded edges are four upward growing pairs of blue leaves with a central white palmette.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"pot metal","id":"x38933"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AA7588","2006AJ8009","2006AA7516","2013GP7699","2019LX1833"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"84","id":"THES49710"},"free":"","case":"SC1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1200-1220","earliest":"1195-01-01","latest":"1220-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"C.8-1959","id":"O116771"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"C.2-1958","id":"O85566"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sight","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sight","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"36.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"2.86","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"All three panels (C.2-1958, C.7 & 8-1959) had been purchased from Canterbury by Philip Nelson.
