He lived and worked in France from 1926 until 1939. During the Second World War he served as an Official War Artist, and worked prolifically covering campaigns in El Alamein, India, Burma, Iran and Normandy. He was also a book illustrator and created a number of animated films.\r\n\r\nThe etching 'Drought' is an example of the intaglio method of printmaking. Anthony Gross was an innovative printmaker. He experimented with techniques to broaden his range of textures, adopting new tools for making marks, such as a multiple etching needle and a mezzotint rocker. He even used a roulette made from the wheel of a cigarette lighter and an ornamental door knob for creating broad patterns. His variety of lines and marks is evident in the densely packed composition of 'Drought'.","physicalDescription":"Colour etching inscribed with the title 'Drought' and 'Trial Print'. Numbered '2/6'. The print depicts a yellow-brown field, with hills outlined in black in the background. There is a building with a gabled roof on either side; one is possibly a church. There is a bent figure with a hat and a basket in the foreground, depicted in grey and red, and two figures, outlined in black, further back in the field, with their arms upstretched, possibly pushing or pulling a cart or plough.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gross, Anthony","id":"A6937"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2180"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"120","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}],[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1968","earliest":"1968-01-01","latest":"1968-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased under the terms of the A.M.
