All the pieces depict classical mythology and include Anne de Montmorency coat of arms in a slightly inaccurate rendering........\r\nMontmorency was the greatest private art patron of the French Renaissance.\r\nNo documentation has come to light about the commission of this service, but it is likely that it was a diplomatic gift from Italy to one of the most influential men at the French court.\r\n\r\nMost of the pieces from the set are inscribed on the back with the name of the workshop in which they were made that of Guido Durantino in Urbino in 1535. \r\nGuido, who later took the name of Fontana, was head of one of the most prolific workshops in Urbino from the 1530s and he employed some of the best istoriato painters available. Although the handwriting on the inscriptions belongs to the same person, there are significant stylistic differences among the various pieces which perhaps suggests more than one painter worked on the set.","physicalDescription":"Candlestick with circular tray, painted with Anne de Montmorency's arms and depicting the story of the river god Alpheus.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Durantino, Guido","id":"A20480"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"workshop of"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Maiolica","id":"THES49023"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CA3297","2009CA3296","2008BU7092","2017KB3301"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"62","id":"THES49739"},"free":"","case":"CA12","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Candlestick","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Urbino","id":"x33375"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1535","earliest":"1530-01-01","latest":"1539-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"C.2243-1910","id":"O158401"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"C.28-1943","id":"O162265"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by George Salting, Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"19.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Diamond-point incised mark '64'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"the collector's mark of Andrew Fountaine"}],"objectHistory":"From the Andrew Fountaine collection, Norfolk","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Candlestick with the coat of arms of Anne de Montmorency, made in the workshop of Guido Durantino, ca. 1535, Urbino","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Alpheus","id":"N290"},{"text":"Arethusa","id":"N289"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"coat of arms","id":"AAT126352"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"CANDLESTICK\r\nAbout 1535\r\nWorkshop of Guido Durantino (died about 1576)\r\n\r\nThe design of this candlestick echoes Islamic metalwork forms.
