Bacchus's identifying attributes include the wreath of vine-leaves and grapes around his head, the goat skin over his shoulder and the bowl of grapes. At the back is the signature of Antonio Tarsia, who was one of the most active Venetian sculptors at the beginning of the 18th century. This group and its companion figure of Thetis came from a fountain: other pieces possibly from the same complex survive at Harlaxton Manor (near Grantham, Lincolnshire), including a <i>Putto in a red marble shell</i>, also signed by Tarsia.","physicalDescription":"Bacchus is seated on the ground with legs extended to the left. He has a cloak draped across his thighs. His head is upturned to the right and in his right hand he holds a bowl of grapes. Behind, a satyr child with a wreath of leaves reaches up to pick grapes out of a bowl. The naturalistic base is carefully rendered and fully finished off behind. At the left is an upturned vase containing a vine plant.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"tarsia","id":"A6394"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Marble","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2019LJ4162","2019LJ4158","2019LJ4151","2019LJ4167","2019LJ4169","2007BM3000","2007BM2997","2007BM2998","2018KW8173","2018KW8182"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES340830"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statue","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"Early 18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1750-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.139-1956","id":"O68980"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"145","unit":"kg","qualifier":"including base","date":{"text":"17/01/2019","earliest":"2019-01-17","latest":"2019-01-17"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"635","unit":"mm","qualifier":"including base","date":{"text":"17/01/2019","earliest":"2019-01-17","latest":"2019-01-17"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"1020","unit":"mm","qualifier":"including base","date":{"text":"17/01/2019","earliest":"2019-01-17","latest":"2019-01-17"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"410","unit":"mm","qualifier":"including base","date":{"text":"17/01/2019","earliest":"2019-01-17","latest":"2019-01-17"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'ANT.
