Westwood’s career in fashion was galvanised by McLaren and together they launched memorable fashion moments, including Punk in the early 1970s and later their Pirates collection. McLaren and Westwood conducted a design relationship between 1971 and 1983. In 1990 and again in 1991 Vivienne Westwood was named British Designer of the Year; she has also received an OBE.\r\n\r\nWestwood’s unique mix of practicality and inventiveness, her preoccupation with silhouette and the manner in which she manipulates fabrics result in dynamic fashion. Westwood herself once said, 'You have a much better life if you wear impressive clothes.’\r\n\r\nThis ensemble is from Westwood and McLaren’s ‘Buffalo’ collection (also called ‘Nostalgia of Mud’). Many of the garments in the collection featured asymmetrical cuts and rough materials such as sheepskin and horn details. Full skirts, such as this example, were made of patchily-stained, fragile wadding, and were inspired by a picture of dancing Peruvian women (Wilcox, C., 'Vivienne Westwood', V & A Publications, 2004, p. 18).","physicalDescription":"Ensemble of pink and green cotton hooded top with printed figures in costume and rose / brown Dacron layered skirt.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"McLaren, Malcolm","id":"A6349"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Vivienne Westwood","id":"A4913"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Gender and Sexuality","id":"THES48940"},{"text":"The Michael and Gerlinde Costiff Costume Collection","id":"THES281236"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2012FP4850","2012FP4851","2012FP4853","2020MT4762"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Top","id":""}],[{"text":"Skirt","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1982","earliest":"1982-01-01","latest":"1982-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support and assistance from the Friends of the V&A, the Elsbeth Evans Trust, and the Dorothy Hughes Bequest","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Woman's ensemble, f, green and pink cotton top and rose and brown dacron and cotton skirt,designed by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, Britain, 'Buffalo' collection, s/s 1982.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"'Buffalo' collection (spring / summer)","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.139:1-2002","T.139:2-2002"],"accessionNumberNum":"139","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2002,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Top","Skirt"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-21","recordCreationDate":"2002-10-30","availableToBook":false}}
