The red sun and the clouds are patches of aquatint, which under a magnifying glass appear granular. The figure, door and sea are in freely drawn etched line. The palm trees combine aquatint tone with etched line. The red ink was applied and printed at the same time as the black so that the plate could be printed at the same time. \r\n\r\nAccording to the artist, ‘The etchings were begun in London in September 1961 after a visit to the United States. My intention was to make eight plates, keeping the original titles but moving the setting to New York.’","physicalDescription":"Image in red and black, features a bottle, man to the right, a doorway and palm trees, beach, clouds and sun to the left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hockney, David","id":"A4233"},"association":{"text":"etcher","id":"AAT25174"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Editions Alecto Ltd.","id":"A22811"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"},{"text":"aquatint","id":"AAT53242"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching and aquatint on steel plate","categories":[{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"9","box":"F"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"printing plate","id":"AAT22755"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1961-2","earliest":"1961-01-01","latest":"1962-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1963","earliest":"1963-01-01","latest":"1963-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.4811-1968","id":"O688944"},"association":"Version"}],"creditLine":"Given by the Artist and the Publishers","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.5","unit":"mm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate thickness","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <u>Victoria & Albert Museum Department of Prints and Drawings and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1968.</u> London: HMSO, 1969.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"LADY CLA[cut off]","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On bottle label"},{"content":"A RAKE'S PROGRESS/ LONDON/NEW YORK/1961-2 / PLATE NO. 3.
