He reclines on the giant serpent Shesha, floating on the primeval waters, with his wife Lakshmi at his feet. From his navel there rises a lotus stalk crowned by a flower, from which Brahma, the god associated with creation, will appear and re-create the universe. The purity of the lotus flower as a fitting vehicle for the birth of a god is a theme found elsewhere in Hinduism and Buddhism. This painting may have been made for the enjoyment of a local ruler and was probably the work of local artists.","physicalDescription":"Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, depicting Vishnu and Lakshmi on the great snake.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"opaque watercolour","id":"x35013"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in opaque watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Hinduism","id":"THES48941"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[{"text":"Pahari","id":"AAT18997"},{"text":"Kangra","id":"AAT19012"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2013GK4299","2006BD5662","2006AJ6341"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES403754"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kangra","id":"x30869"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1870","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1874-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"P.
