They showed 'samples' of patterns and stitches and recorded how to achieve particular effects. In Europe in the 17th century samplers provided instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. This Dutch sampler was made in Friesland in 1751. Here the embroiderer has experimented with the traditional border patterns, elaborate lettering and strong colours typical of the area.","physicalDescription":"Sampler of embroidered linen with coloured silks in cross-stitch, satin-stitch, Algerian eye-stitch, back-stitch, stem-stitch and chain-stitch. The alphabet is embroidered across the top of the sampler with the final four letters on the row below. The centre of the upper half of the sampler has the letters 'R.SS.I' (top row) and 'M.T.' (bottom row) separated by large hearts and the date is embroidered 'ANNO 1751'. The rest of the sampler is filled with border motifs, mostly of stylised birds, arranged in five columns, and each border being separated by a line of chain stitch.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered linen with coloured silks","categories":[{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AP0806"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES311535"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Friesland","id":"x29766"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Groningen","id":"x29768"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1751","earliest":"1751-01-01","latest":"1751-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"31.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'ANNO 1751 RS SI / MT'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1751","earliest":"1751-01-01","latest":"1751-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidering","position":"in top half of sampler","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Inscribed in top half of sampler"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sampler of embroidered linen with coloured silks, possibly made in Groningen or Friesland, Netherlands, 1751.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
