The sign above says ‘Mungo’s Hotel. Dealer in British Spirits’. The term Mungo was used in a discriminatory fashion to describe Black enslaved servants in 18th century Britain. The term derives from an opera of 1768 entitled 'The Padlock' by Isaac Bickerstaffe.  This man is not shown as indentured however and is the owner of the hotel. He pours a glass of gin for the duchess whilst a woman behind him says: ‘Give the Man a Vote my Dear he is a good Man for the Ladies’, suggestive of his prowess as a lover.
