The series was made in two versions. Lansetti I did not have the base or the slimmed foot you can see here on  Lansetti II. The designer, Timo Sarpaneva, worked with a wide variety of materials. In 1950 he joined Iittala, where he designed both sculptural pieces, such as the Lansetti series, and popular everyday glass. He also created the distinctive red 'i' symbol that has become the Iittala logo.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sarpaneva, Timo","id":"A898"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Iittala glassworks","id":"A177"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cased glass, clear over opaque white","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"}],"styles":[{"text":"20TH CONT","id":"x29276"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AV9261","2018KV1846"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"131","id":"THES49882"},"free":"","case":"34","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Finland","id":"x28847"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1952","earliest":"1952-01-01","latest":"1952-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29340"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Timo Sarpaneva Iittala' incised","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Makers's mark","note":"Makers's mark"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Form, Finland, designed by Timo Sarpaneva, for Iittala glassworks, 1952","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Opie,J: Scandinavia; ceramics & glass in the 20thC  Sarpaneva's own book  R Craig Miller ....(see handlist guff)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"This design was shown at the Triennale, Milan 1954, where it was awarded a grand prix.  The 'Lansetti' series were made in two versions; Lansetti I does not have the slimmed foot, or base.  This example, Lansetti II, was purchased from the exhibition 'Modern Art in Finland' which travelled to London, Leeds, Brighton and Dublin in 1953.  The series was almost instantly translated into classics of their time.  Timo Sarpaneva (b.1926) joined Iittala in 1950 and, like Wirkkala (see 9576 etc), he designs for a wide variety of other materials. In glass he has produced designs for the most exclusive of Iittala production, as here, and for the most popular as in the ubiquitous 'Festivo' series of candlesticks (see 0197).  He was also responsible for the red 'i' symbol, the Iittala logo.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["CIRC.458-1954"],"accessionNumberNum":"458","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1954,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Glass gallery number","id":"THES50491"},"number":"9629"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"1997-12-13","availableToBook":false}}
