Unfamiliar flora and fauna were of great interest to British botanists in the 18th and 19th centuries, and such enthusiasm gradually filtered down to the general public. Travellers often returned to Britain with foreign plants and, more commonly, paintings depicting numerous species of tropical flowers and fruits.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular watercolour painting depicting a flower on plain ground. Leaves large, broad-ovate to nearly round-ovate in outline, 4-8 inches wide, broadly 3- to 5-lobed, on slender stalks. The large white or pink flowers, clustered at branch ends in autumn, open early in the morning, turning to deep red in the evening. Because it flowers in autumn its ancient name is jushuang (resists frost).
