In 1843, he became one of the first to produce daguerreotypes – an early form of photography – opening a studio in Charleston, South Carolina. He later extended his business as a franchise across the eastern United States, including Baltimore, where these portraits were made. Despite his success, the Whitehurst business declined from the late 1850s and its last studio closed down around 1864.
