About 1865\r\nPencil\r\n\r\nThis design comes from a large group of \r\nsheets each of which is drawn in the same\r\ntechnique, one side of each design being off\r\nset from a pencil drawing on the other. They \r\nreflect a search for new vessel forms, and a\r\nnew fashion in the 1860s for reviing the late\r\neighteenth century technique of 'bright cut'\r\nengraving. Here, however, the designer has\r\nused a pattern based on sixteenth century\r\ngrotesque ornament. The dominance of the\r\nornament suggests that the drawings may not\r\nbe designs for the vessels themselves but for\r\nthe engraving on them.
