'Gasparo Diziani' \r\nPen and ink and wash \r\n12 5/8 x 8 3/4 (321 x 222) 9116A \r\nPROVENANCE Anonymous 18th century Venetian collection annotated in 'the reliable hand' (see the exhibition catalogue by A. Bettagno, Disegni di una collezione veneziana del settecento, Venice, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, 1966, pp. 13-24); bought 1883 \r\nLITERATURE A. Bettagno, loc. cit., p. 74, no. 87 and fig. 87; A. P. Zugni- Tauro, Gaspare Diziani, Venice, n.d., p. 96; pl. 354 \r\n\r\nThe attributions recorded in the well known handwriting seen on this sheet are often correct, and there is no reason to question the name of Diziani here. The best study of Diziani's drawings is in I. Fenyö, 'Disegni veneziani nel Museo di Belle Arti di Budapest' in Acta Historiae Artium Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, 6, 1959, pp. 90-133. See also the illustrated catalogues of the exhibitions of drawings at the Cini Foundation, Venice, 1957-64, notably those by Muraro, 1957; Benesch, 1961; Bettagno, 1963; and Pignatti, 1964. \r\n\r\nZugni- Tauro describes the drawing as a design for the upper part of the ceiling fresco 'the Apotheosis of the Widmann Family' in the Palazzo Widmann, Venice, probably painted 1755-60. The connection is not very close, but the drawing, like the fresco, contains a group of putti with some banners and a hero being crowned by an angel. It may well be a first idea for part of the fresco. \r\n"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["9116A"],"accessionNumberNum":"9116","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-21","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
