It emerged in Paris during the war and became an essential tool in achieving the silhouette of the 'New Look', launched by Christian Dior (1905-57) in 1947.\r\n\r\nSome people thought that the 'New Look' was a backward step for women's rights, because it restricted women. \r\n\r\nThis corset was made by J. Roussel, who had branches on the Boulevard Hausmann in Paris, and also on Regent Street in London. They specialised in exclusive corsetry made from a very fine elastic knit fabric galled ‘gaine’.","physicalDescription":"Pink elasticated cotton waist corset with 7 hook and eye closures.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Roussel, J.","id":"A6327"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Elasticated cotton, hook and eye closure","categories":[{"text":"Underwear","id":"THES48880"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Shekou","id":"THES279777"},{"text":"Values of Design","id":"THES279818"},{"text":"Design Society","id":"THES279819"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2009CD4178","2009CD4177"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES309569"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"corset","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1948","earliest":"1948-01-01","latest":"1948-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Patricia Wilson","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"waist","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"19","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'[illegible] / J.
