At first the top and bottom rims of the spool shaped sides were of equal diameter. Later examples like this one have a narrower top, and here the sides are engraved with a floral swags between two rolls of palmettes. These articles became a speciality of Dublin silversmiths in the mid-18th century and were later copied in Sheffield plate by Sheffield manufacturers. \r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Side engraved with a floral swags between two rolls of palmettes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sheffield plate","id":"AAT81349"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheffield plate","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9783"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES405385"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish ring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1785","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1789-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Mrs M.
