The earliest examples in silver were in the shape of Chinese porcelain tea jars. Later, caddies in silver or Sheffield plate were made in many styles, shapes and sizes. This oval example is topped by an octagonal tower with grooved sides and a domed pull-off cover. \r\n\r\nThe term caddy is derived from the Malay word, <i>kati</i>: a unit of measurement used for weighing tea. The <i>kati</i> was equivalent to about 1-1/3 pounds (600 grams), or the standard 18th century packet of tea.\r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Oval, the ends with hinged lids, closed by locks; in the centre an octagonal tower with grooved sides with a domed pull-off cover fluted and surmounted by a knob.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sheffield plate","id":"AAT81349"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheffield plate","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK1865"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES409271"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES409271"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tea caddy","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1790","earliest":"1785-01-01","latest":"1794-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Mrs Davis Gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.68","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"26.67","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tea caddy and lid, Sheffield plate, ca. 1790, English","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.430-1927","M.430PART/1-1927"],"accessionNumberNum":"430","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1927,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Tea caddy","Lid"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-08","recordCreationDate":"2002-09-25","availableToBook":true}}
