The design is based on Egyptian wall paintings. There was a craze for Egyptian style objects following Howard Carter’s excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.\r\n\r\nThe firm of William Foxton Ltd., founded in 1903, produced some of the most innovative artist-designed textiles of the 1920s. It commissioned artists such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Claude Lovat Fraser, F. Gregory Brown and Minnie McLeish. In 1915 William Foxton helped to found the Design and Industries Association. The aim was to improve the standard of British industrial design by exhibiting new designs and communicating information about them to those working in the field.","physicalDescription":"Chevrons and stripes of blocks and lines based on Egyptian wall paintings in red, pale blues, peach, brown, grey and white on a beige ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Claud Lovat Fraser","id":"A5405"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"William Foxton","id":"A2548"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Cretonne","id":"x32082"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Roller printing","id":"x33305"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Roller printed cretonne","categories":[{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AL0675"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"012","id":"THES307880"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1922","earliest":"1922-01-01","latest":"1922-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the British Institute of Industrial Arts","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"114","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"82","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Roller printed cretonne, British, 1922.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Samuels, Charlotte. <font -u>Art Deco Textiles.</font> London : V&A Publications, 2003.
