A symbol of stability during the 18th century, the two handled cup evolved to its largest size about 1775. This form was extensively copied by the Sheffield plate industry. This example, one of a pair, is from about 1790. The lower part of the vase shape body is gadrooned; the upper is chased with two oval panels of floral ornament containing flame shields, handles with reeded borders.\r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver.
