It is in the form of a small brazier, but the hemispherical bowl has no pierced work in the body. Although this example has pierced rims for both the bowl and the foot. The wide, circular tray at the foot would have supported a pair of tongs used to lift a piece of burning charcoal.  \r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"A circular tray with reeded edge resting on three tapered feet; the centre in the form of a goblet with spreading lip pierced with vertical slits.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sheffield plate","id":"AAT81349"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheffield plate","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK1871"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES409270"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412586"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pipe lighter","id":""}],[{"text":"Pipe lighter","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 18th century","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Wolseley Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sheffield plate, English, late 18th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.193-1920","M.193A-1920"],"accessionNumberNum":"193","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1920,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Pipe lighter [1]","Pipe lighter [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-08","recordCreationDate":"2002-09-24","availableToBook":true}}
