Such casters are without a handle and have a domed cover that is pierced with small circular holes rather than the ornamental pierced work on most larger casters.  Those dating from the late 18th century, in either silver or Sheffield plate, often had pierced decoration on the body, like the vertical slits and bands of laurel on this example, which then required a glass liner. \r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Slender ovoid with spreading foot and incurved shoulder; pierced with vertical slits and bands of laurel: beaded borders","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sheffield plate","id":"AAT81349"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheffield plate, with blue glass liner","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9744"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES405657"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES405657"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES405657"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES407382"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES407382"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES407382"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Muffineer","id":""}],[{"text":"Shaker","id":""}],[{"text":"Shaker lid","id":""}],[{"text":"Shaker liner","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}],[{"text":"Liner","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 18th century","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Wolseley Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"4.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Muffineer, copper plated with silver, with blue glass liners, late 18th century, English","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.188PART/2-1920","M.188PART/1-1920","M.188-1920","M.188A/1-1920","M.188A/2-1920","M.188A/3-1920"],"accessionNumberNum":"188","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1920,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Liner","Lid","Muffineer","Shaker","Shaker lid","Shaker liner"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-08","recordCreationDate":"2002-09-24","availableToBook":true}}
