(1760/1 –1814)\r\nBorn London, made prints in London\r\nPrintmaking activity: about 1780 –1808\r\n\r\nCaroline Watson was trained by her father, James Watson. It is likely that she was trained in the family workshop alongside ‘her dear aunt’, Elizabeth Judkins, whose prints are displayed nearby.\r\nThrough her skill in the novel stipple technique, Watson rose to become ‘Engraver to the Queen’. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of George III, was a significant supporter of women artists, but this was the first time that a woman printmaker had been awarded such a prestigious accolade.\r\n\r\nThese stipples are evidence of the artistic networks that Watson forged in the highly competitive art world. Her print of St Matthew is from a painting in the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds, first President of the Royal Academy of Arts. Reynolds encouraged Watson to study works in his collection for inspiration. He praised her talent: ‘Miss Watson has shown equal excellence in this specimen of her Art’.","date":{"text":"2022","earliest":"2022-01-01","latest":"2022-12-31"}}],"partNumbers":["12158"],"accessionNumberNum":"12158","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-10-28","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
