Invariably, there was a bottle of oil and another for vinegar. This oval frame rests on four tapering feet and the side is pierced with leafy scrolls, rosettes and vertical slits. Between the bottles is a shaped plaque, pierced and chased with rosettes and laurel. A rod with looped handle rises from the centre. The bottles are engraved with paterae and festoons of laurel and have Sheffield plate mounts. \r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver.
