They are vase-shaped, with coloured glass liners and pierced decoration. At this time pierced decoration on silver was enormously popular and the Sheffield plating industry was just getting under way. Sheffield plate was a thin layer of silver fused to a copper core that provided a cheaper alternative to sterling silver.\r\n\r\nSilversmiths traditionally used a fretsaw to cut patterns out of silver sheet but sawing plated objects tended to disturb the thin layer of silver and expose the edge of the copper beneath. The solution was the fly press, which contained a shaped punch that pressed out patterns in silver-plated copper. As the fly press pierced the plate metal, it also ingeniously dragged the top layer of silver over the edge of the copper. It joined it to the layer of silver on the underside and so concealed the cut copper edge.","physicalDescription":"Vase-shaped, stamped with paterae and swags of laurel on a ground pierced with lozenges and vertical slits.
