Versions exist in both silver and Sheffield plate, like this bowl shaped example, supported on a tall pillar and decorated with shallow fluting and a band of rosettes around the bowl. Tweezers, a pickwick, and chains for two other, now missing, implements are attached to a ring suspended from a hook in front.  \r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver.
