The usual form is drum shaped, but they also came in oval, rectangular and even vase shaped in the late 18th century. The lids, as on this octagonal example, were usually hinged with a raised thumbpiece and indentation for the stem of the mustard spoon. In the late18th century, in silver and Sheffield plate examples, pierced decoration of the body with an attendant glass liner became popular.\r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Octagonal, with scroll handle and flat lid with openwork shell purchase.
