The usual form is drum shaped, but they also came in oval, like this example, rectangular and even vase shaped in the late 18th century. The lids were usually hinged with a raised thumbpiece and indentation for the stem of the mustard spoon. In the late18th century, in silver and Sheffield plate examples, pierced decoration of the body with an attendant glass liner became popular. This pot is reeded and pierced for decoration and engraved with a crest.\r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Oval, the side vertically reeded and pierced, and chased with two bands of rosettes, reeded scroll handle, domed lid with silvered brass knob, engraved with a crest, a cubit arm holding a club (?), with motto FRAPPE FORT.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sheffield plate","id":"AAT81349"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheffield plate","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9751"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES405655"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES405655"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mustard pot","id":""}],[{"text":"Liner","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1780","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1784-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Miss M.
