The usual form is drum shaped, but they also came in oval, like this example, rectangular and even vase shaped in the late 18th century. The lids were usually hinged with a raised thumbpiece and indentation for the stem of the mustard spoon. In the late18th century, in silver and Sheffield plate examples, pierced decoration of the body with an attendant glass liner became popular. This mustard pot is chased with festoons and pierced with a bowl of flowers.\r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Oval, with domed cover, terminating in a small knob, scroll handle and edges reeded, chased with festoons and pierced with a bowl of flowers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sheffield plate","id":"AAT81349"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheffield plate, with a blue glass liner","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9753"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES405656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES405656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mustard pot","id":""}],[{"text":"Liner","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 18th century","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Wolseley Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.3","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3.7","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"English, late 18th century, blue glass.; Sheffield plate\n\nEnglish, late 18th century, copper plated with silver Sheffield plate and blue glass liner.; Sheffield plate","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.183PART/1-1920","M.183-1920"],"accessionNumberNum":"183","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1920,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Liner","Mustard pot"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-08","recordCreationDate":"2002-09-17","availableToBook":true}}
