By the late 18th century, single or sometimes double salt cellars, distributed at regular intervals down the length of the table, were common. These salt cellars were a popular in Sheffield plate, like this example, which has a central, upright handle decorated with foliage and palmettes.\r\n\r\nSheffield plate originated, with the discovery in 1742, that bars of silver and copper, in unequal proportions, fused by heating under pressure, could be rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The industry this material created flourished for about 100 years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"An oval stand on four ball feet, with two cup-shaped salt cellars attached.
