The jockeys are also dressed in their racing colours.\n\nHistorical significance: Calcutta was recognised as the capital of British India from 1833-1912. By the 1830s, artists (patuas) had arrived from rural villages in Bengal and began to produce paintings that reflected the local history, mythology, customs and conflics of a colonised society. As a popular art form, these artists are recognised for their use of brilliant colour, simplified images, bold and swift brushstrokes that became the hallmark of Kalighat painting in the 19th and early 20th century.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painting, jockeys horse-racing, opaque watercolour and tin alloy on paper, Kalighat, Kolkata, ca. 1830","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Arts of Bengal : the heritage of Bangladesh and eastern India : an exhibition organized by the Whitechapel Art Gallery in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum : 9 November-30 December 1979, Whitechapel Art Gallery ..., 12 January-17 February 1980, Manchester City Art Gallery ... .
