However, a convincing case has been made for ascribing to Sangallo a relief in Berlin of the Virgin and Child with three Putti, which although much larger and in much higher relief, has very close compositional affinities with this relief. Two drawings in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence ascribed to Sangallo supply further evidence for the ascription of the composition to him.","physicalDescription":"Oval relief in gilded and painted stucco. The Virgin, seated in full-length, is represented facing to the right, with the sleeping child on her knees, supported in her right arm. Her left arm is outstretched. Among the clouds on which she sits are two flying putti. \r\nThe figures are gilded, the background is painted dark blue. The original wooden frame is of carved and gilded wood.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"da Sangallo, Francesco","id":"A6233"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stucco","id":"AAT14966"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gilded and painted stucco relief","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2025PL0162","2018KY8866","2017KB3955"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397677"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT47230"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 16th century","earliest":"1525-01-01","latest":"1575-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"71.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without the frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without the frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"17","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"107","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"93","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased in Florence (vendor not recorded, £3 4s).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stucco relief, 'Virgin and Child with Two Putti', Francesco da Sangallo, mid 16th century, Italian","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1860. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
