It encouraged American designers to create furniture and interiors in the modern style. One example is this printed silk dress fabric called ‘Stars and Stripes’ by Helen Wills Moody, the tennis player, who was also an amateur artist. The pattern, which plays on the American flag, is part of the ‘Americana’ range of dress fabrics. The Stehli Silks Corporation commissioned this range from leading artists in 1927. To make a change from ubiquitous floral patterns, these fabrics were designed specifically to depict contemporary American life.","physicalDescription":"Red and white stars circled and joined by loops on a navy ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wills, Helen","id":"A6211"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Stehli Silks Corporation","id":"A6210"},"association":{"text":"textile manufacturer","id":"x40315"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Silk crêpe","id":"x34621"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Printed","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed silk crêpe de Chine","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AL0704","2006BF7571"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES307407"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York (City)","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1927","earliest":"1927-01-01","latest":"1927-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Stehli Silks Corporation","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"32.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Printed silk crêpe de Chine, USA, 1927.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Samuels, Charlotte. <font -u>Art Deco Textiles.</font> London : V&A Publications, 2003.
