Where only one motif is used in a carpet, colour is often used to create regular patterns, but not in this example.","physicalDescription":"Carpet, hand knotted woollen pile on woollen warp and weft, Caucasian, 1870s.\r\n\r\nWARP: cream wool; Z2S; 15 threads per inch (59 per dm).\r\n\r\nWEFT: cream wool; Z2S; 3 shoots after each row of knots; 9 knots per inch (35 per dm).\r\n\r\nPILE: wool; 12 colours: red, light orange, dark yellow, yellow, green, dark blue, blue, dark purple, light purple, pink, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around two threads; 68 knots per sq.inch (1033 per sq. dm).\r\n\r\nSIDE FINISH: 3 cords overcast with light blue wool with some dark blue wool in one area which may be a repair.\r\n\r\nEND FINISH: Lower: 3 rows ofweft-twining with light blue wool immediately below the pile followed by 1cm plainweave with cream weft and then 4 rows of warp twining and 3 rows of knots with max. length 2\" (5 cms) of a warp thread fringe.  Upper: as Lower but only 4 passes of cream weft between the weft and the warp twining.  There are 3 (not 4) rows of warp twining and each group of 4 warp threads seems to have been knotted beforetwining all 3 rows.  The knotted fringe is like the Lower one.\r\n\r\nDESIGN: Field: dark blue ground with rows of 2 and two halves or 3 closely oacked, quartered and hooked motifs forming lozenges.  The vertical lines are emphasised by tiny white cloudbands.
