This frequently happens with black wool, or shades close to black, if they have been obtained from tannins and iron.  They are very vulnerable to light and the fibres corrode and the pile falls out. Painted canvas has been used to repair the lower left hand outer border of this carpet.","physicalDescription":"Carpet, hand knotted woollen pile on woollen wap and weft, Caucasian, 1850-1875.\r\n\r\nWARP: dark brown and white wool plied together; Z3S (1b+2w); 12 threads per inch (46 per dm).\r\n\r\nWEFT: white wool; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 7 knots per inch (29 per dm).\r\n\r\nPILE: wool; 13 colours: dark red, red, yellow, green, dark blue, blue, light blue, dark purple, pink, brown, very light brown, black [heavily decayed], white; symmetrical knot tied around two threads; 42 knots per sq.inch (667 per sq. dm).\r\n\r\nSIDE FINISH: missing \r\n\r\nEND FINISH: Lower: incomplete. Evidence of 3 rows of weft twining. Upper: as Lower but with evidence of 4 rows of weft twining. \r\n\r\nDESIGN: Field: light blue ground frames 7 stepped and hooked crosses filled with tiny geometric devices; each cross contained within an octagon and with a triangle at each corner to complete a rectangle.\r\nMain border: white ground with a hooked, diagonalmotif in most colours.\r\nInner border: small squares with contrasting flowerheads.\r\nOuter border: black ground with four-petalled rosettes.\r\nGuard stripes are on both sides of the inner border and the inner side of the outer border but also at the upper end on the outer side of the outer border.
