The town is shown on either bank of the River Euphrates, which cuts across most of the composition. Details include the passage over the bridge of refugees, who are returning to their homes with white flags raised (centre); the execution of Sadiq Efendi for the killing of a British major (left of centre, below the river); and two RAF biplanes. There is an inscription in Arabic running around part of the edge of the tray, and four glosses in Arabic identify parts of the composition.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AF7177"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES340982"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tray","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iraq","id":"x28917"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1918","earliest":"1918-01-01","latest":"1918-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"582","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"25","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"As on the tray:\r\nهد ولايت تويريج [...] خريطة قد خرج العسكر من الحلة إلى هندية وأمر الحاكم السياسي أن يرجع المهاجرون إلى محلهم مع راية أبيض في يوم خمس وعشرين شهر محرم سنة ١٣٣٧","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"31 October 1918","earliest":"1918-10-31","latest":"1918-10-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Arabic","medium":"","method":"engraving","position":"around the edge of the design","script":"Arabic","translation":"This is the district of Tuwayrij … The troops had left al-Hillah for Hindiyyah, and the political officer ordered that displaced people were to return to their homes with white flags, on the 25th day of the month of Muharram in the year 1337 [equivalent to 31 October 1918].","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"The sub-standard Arabic of the inscription is more likely to be the result of a non-native speaker translating an English text into Arabic than errors by a native speaker."}],"objectHistory":"The date on this tray is equivalent to 31 October 1918. On 30 October an armistice was signed at Mudros on the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea by representatives of the Ottoman empire and the Allied Powers, bringing hostilities to an end at noon the next day. The date was therefore significant. Nevertheless, other evidence suggests that the events shown took place later, during the revolt against the British in Iraq in 1920, aimed at gaining independence.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tray, brass, engraved scene commemorating events in al-Hindiyyah, Iraq, circa 1920.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"David Trotter, \"At the Towner Gallery: Jananne Al-Ani\", <i>London Review of Books</i>, volume 44, no. 9, 12 May 2022.","free":"https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v44/n09/david-trotter/at-the-towner-gallery"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Tim Stanley, \"Armistice Day, 1918\", in Tim Stanley and others, <i>Palace and Mosque.
