The figure is a chubby winged infant or putto (Italian: 'cherub' ). Putti derive from the ancient Greek messengers of the gods and were a popular motif in the art of the Renaissance and Baroque period. This one is holding one side of a cartouche or scroll, which may have been inscribed with a motto or name. The other end was probably held by another putto.\r\n\r\nThe panel probably formed part of a border, most likely in a secular setting. The glass painter has used used brown/black pigment on clear glass - a technique known as grisaille. The skilful execution includes shading and scratching out to create highlights.","physicalDescription":"Stained glass fragment.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AJ7895","2006AJ7893"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES316697"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fragment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-1799","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1799-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr. Grosvenor Thomas","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"585","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-20","latest":"2017-12-20"},"part":"unframed composite panel","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"416","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-20","latest":"2017-12-20"},"part":"unframed composite panel","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stained glass fragment, Dutch, 18th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"cherub","id":"x31364"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.423-1915"],"accessionNumberNum":"423","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1915,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-12","recordCreationDate":"2002-07-16","availableToBook":true}}
