This figure is recognised as Madame de Maintenon but there is no evidence for this association. The figure is more likely to have been copied from costume prints by the Bonnart Brothers in Paris around 1650-1670. Due to Chinese potter's unfamiliarity with European features the figure retains slightly Asian facial characteristics while her clothing appears caricatured. Despite her naively rendered form the figure was still considered as 'exotic' item and was very popular as a decorative piece in European homes.","physicalDescription":"Chinese porcelain figure of lady (Madame de Maintenon) in 18<sup>th </sup>century European dress, decorated with mainly famille verte (green, yellow and black) enamel colours.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted with overglaze enamels","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Figures & Decorative ceramics","id":"THES48954"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kangxi","id":"AAT18482"},{"text":"Polychrome","id":"x44055"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BV0922","2010EC0623","2010EC0622","2006BD6298","2006AN8273","2006AN8267","2018LC2703"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"European woman","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"C.109-1963","id":"O66661"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Basil Ionides Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"female figure","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Male figure ","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Figure of european woman, porcelain painted with overglaze enamel colours; China (Jingdezhen), Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, ca. 1700","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Lu","id":"AUTH321139"},"details":"p.138","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"<i>Chinese ceramic figures : catalogue of an exhibition held by the Oriental Ceramic Society from April 8th to June 21st, 1947</i>, London : The Society, 1948","id":"AUTH357724"},"details":"91","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Maintenon, Françoise de (Marquise de Maintenon)","id":"N1707"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"woman","id":"x35642"},{"text":"costume","id":"AAT209261"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.109A-1963"],"accessionNumberNum":"109","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1963,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-07","recordCreationDate":"2002-07-15","availableToBook":false}}
